What is a Batik?

The word 'Batik' means 'writing with wax'.

The technique was first used by the Javanese civilization in the 6th century A.D.and uses a wax resist method of controlling where each color is directed.

Batiks are most commonly found as designs on silk scarves and some articles of clothing. We have combined the techniques traditionally used with batiks to create our Beatle Batiks. Hot wax is brushed onto the cloth where the image has been drawn to control where the dye gets into the cloth. Each stage of dying is protected from the next dying phase by the application of hot wax. Once the wax cools, it becomes brittle. A common characteristic of batik is called the 'crackle effect'. This occurs when the dye gets into the cracks which are created when the waxed cloth is crumpled up and submerged into the dye. This 'crackle effect' can be controlled from no crackle to a lot of crackle.

These photos show the steps involved in the making of the "Ringo Avedon" batik.
Our hand-made Beatle Batiks are made at the time they are ordered. Each one is an original work of art that cannot be reproduced exactly. On this website you will see examples of what has been done, but it is by no means the end to what 'can' be done. You may select the colors you want to go with the images you want. If you have other images that you would like to have as a batik, this can be done for a nominal fee.
